Romans: 7:8-9
8 But sin, seizing the
opportunity afford by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous
desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.
9 Once I was alive apart from
law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
As we see in verse 8, the law produced me in every kinds of
covetous desire. We had just mentioned about the law reveals that we are a
sinner, but here not only reveals we are sinner but also the law which is given
to us produced more sin in our life.
Here my point that, the ministry of law produced
sin, when the law has come to our life. The law reveals that we are a sinner
and through that law, we can understand what to do and not to.
This shows us how, through the law, Paul came to
know sin. He speaks of the covet, “for I have not known the lust except He
said, you shall not lust, but sin taking
occasion by the commandment, produced in me all manner of lusting” this
gives a deeper view of the tenth commandment than the mere words suggest. The
law has driven sin from its concealment. Then the law was not sin, but holy.
That is the external, overcoming the opposition of the internal. It indicated
furnishing the material ground of attack.
Since
Paul was a devout Pharisee, seeking to obey the Law before his conversion. After
his conversion he can understand that sin is
personified as a powerful enemy, who has established a base of operations
within the stronghold of Man soul. That sin Produce in human being all kinds of
wrong desires.
Something in human nature wants to fight
back whenever a law is given. While I was studying in a school, I was looked at
the newly painted benches; and I noticed a sign on each wet bench: “Do Not
Touch.” As I watched, I saw many student were intentionally reach out and touch
the wet paint! Why? Because the sign told them not to! “Because the carnal mind
is hate against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed
can be” (Rom 8:7).
Believers who try to live by rules
and regulations discover that their lawfulness system only produce more sin and
creates more problems. Because the Law
produced sin in our nature.
